Mojkovac Memorial Centre

The Memorial Centre responds to the challenge of commemorating the Battle of Mojkovac through an architectural intervention embedded within the landscape of the historic battlefield. Conceived as an extension of the terrain, the building establishes a dialogue between memory, topography, and visitor movement.

The design draws on symbols closely connected to the experience of the battle. As the fighting took place over Orthodox Christmas, oak and charred timber reference the tradition of burning the oak- badnjak, a ritual symbolically maintained by soldiers during the battle. Charred wood therefore becomes a central material within the memorial spaces, connecting collective memory with a specific human experience of the event. Sunken paths and trench-like sequences further evoke the conditions of the battlefield, allowing visitors to experience history through movement, material, and atmosphere.
